Walworth Town Hall

Walworth Town Hall

Commercial

The transformation of Walworth Town Hall in South London stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of heritage preservation and contemporary design. After suffering significant fire damage in 2013, this Grade II-listed Victorian landmark has been wonderfully restored by Feix & Merlin Architects, in collaboration with General Projects and Southwark Council, into a vibrant community and workspace hub.

Feix & Merlin approached the restoration with a philosophy of “knowing where and when to hold back,” allowing the building’s history to guide the design process. The original structure, comprising four interconnected buildings with varying floor levels, presented challenges in accessibility and circulation. To address this, a new lift core was introduced, and strategic connections were made between the buildings to create level access across most spaces, improving inclusivity and accessibility for all users.

The revitalised town hall now accommodates over 550 workers across flexible offices and coworking desks, tailored for independent and creative businesses. Public areas include a ground-floor community centre, a new café operated by JUSU Brothers, and a restaurant situated within the central lobby. The community centre, managed by the Walworth Town Hall Community Space Board, offers a diverse programme of events and activities, reinforcing the building’s role as a cultural and social hub.

Throughout the restoration, the lighting of the exterior was considered extensively; we didn’t want to over-light the building, and due to its listed status, we needed to be careful with the fixtures that were chosen. We carefully balanced highlighting the building’s architectural elements with creating an inviting space while improving the lit functionality with preserving the fabric of the building.

The rejuvenation of Walworth Town Hall exemplifies how thoughtful design and community engagement can breathe new life into historic structures, creating spaces that honour the past while embracing the future.
