A Grade II listed building completed in 1883, BAFTA’s HQ needed a major redevelopment that could double its capacity and dramatically expand its internationally-renown charitable programme in the creative industries of film, games and television.
The central aspect of Benedetti Architects’ scheme was the creation of a new floor to make more room for learning activities and apply the latest technology for a more energy-saving and human-centric space. The redevelopment also involved interventions in several leisure and hospitality spaces, including a new cinema theatre, where we provided Flos Light Shadow, a powerful, discreet and compact downlight designed to avoid glare for maximum comfort.
As per the architects’ requirement, and by collaborating with lighting designers LAPD, we provided some of Flos’ best professional lighting solutions: The Running Magnet, KAP, Light Shadow, plus The Tracking Magnet and UT 57 downlight in an elegant custom brushed bronze finish, which gives continuity to the dialogue between light and the original character of the building.
Carla Sorrentino, Associate Director of Benedetti Architects, mentioned that “A particular challenging item has been the fully suspended track with [custom] brass-finished adjustable spotlights around the double-high space under one of the three Victorian Rooflights. This required a bespoke hanging solution that was quickly designed and installed thanks to Atrium’s collaborative approach.”
