Celebrating 50 Years: Honouring Our Past, Building Our Future in the Lighting Industry
In our latest Meaning of Light series, we were joined by renowned experts, Professor Bob Fosbury and Professor Glen Jeffery from UCL. Together, they delved into the fascinating world of infrared light and its profound impact on human health.
Professor Fosbury illuminated the crucial role of sunlight in our well-being. He highlighted the stark contrast between the full solar spectrum and the limited light exposure we experience indoors. Modern lifestyles, dominated by indoor living and artificial lighting, have led to a condition he dubbed “21st Century Scurvy.” He emphasised the importance of near-infrared light, abundant in nature, particularly in the light reflected by plants and trees. This wavelength of light is essential for optimal mitochondrial function, a key factor in ageing and overall health.
Professor Jeffery expanded on the topic, focusing on the intricate relationship between light, mitochondria, and health. Mitochondria, often referred to as the “powerhouses of the cell,” are responsible for producing energy. Research has shown that red light therapy can significantly boost mitochondrial function, leading to a range of health benefits, including:
Both professors underscored the urgent need to re-evaluate our approach to indoor lighting. By incorporating more red light into our environments, we can mitigate the negative effects of artificial light exposure and promote optimal health.
