‘The Meaning of Light Series’ – Light, Biological Rhythms and Architecture with Prof Russell Foster

In our recent online series, “The Meaning of Light,” we had the privilege of hosting Professor Russell Foster, a leading expert in circadian neuroscience. His talk, “Light, Biological Rhythms, and Architecture,” provided a comprehensive exploration of the profound influence of light on our biology and its implications for architectural design.

A Deep Dive into Circadian Systems

Professor Foster began by unraveling the intricate workings of our circadian systems, the internal, 24 hour master clocks that govern our sleep-wake cycles and other biological functions. He explained how these rhythms are maintained by a complex interplay of biological, chemical, and environmental factors, such as light exposure.

He then discussed the role of melatonin, a biological marker of the dark and a hormone that mildly modulates sleep, in the sleep/wake cycle and how it is influenced by light exposure. He also delved into the mechanics of the visual system, particularly the retina’s role in detecting light and transmitting signals to the brain. Additionally, Professor Foster explored the concept of chronotypes, individual differences in our natural sleep-wake patterns, and how they can influence the sleep/wake circadian network.

The Consequences of Circadian Disruption

In the second part of his talk, Professor Foster highlighted the detrimental effects of disrupting our circadian rhythms. He demonstrated how these disruptions can lead to a range of issues, including:

  • Cognitive impairment
  • Difficulty with concentration, memory, decision-making and problem-solving
  • Psychosocial problems: Increased social issues, anxiety, depression, and irritability and decreased self-esteem
  • Physiological problems: Increased risk of cardiovascular disease, Type II diabetes, cancer and dementia as well as lowered immunity

He also discussed the correlative relationship between circadian disruption and mental illness, emphasising the importance of maintaining healthy sleep-wake cycles for overall well-being.

The Role of Light in Architectural Design

Finally, Professor Foster turned his attention to the implications of light and circadian research for architectural design. He emphasized the importance of incorporating natural light into our built environments to support healthy circadian rhythms. He also discussed the critical factors to consider for optimal circadian/sleep regulation when designing spaces, including:

  • Light intensity and wavelength: The brightness and colour temperature of light can significantly impact our circadian rhythms.
  • Exposure time: The duration of light exposure at certain times e.g morning vs dusk light.
  • Individual differences: Chronotypal differences, light sensitivity and latitude influence people’s needs for light and their circadian systems, and designs should accommodate individual needs.
  • Light history: Our past exposure to light can influence our current response.

Professor Foster concluded by expressing optimism about the potential for creating healthier and more sustainable buildings by incorporating a deeper understanding of the science of light and human biology.

Missed the Event?

If you missed this enlightening talk or our talk with author Anna Levin, you can watch the full recordings on our YouTube channel.

Next month, we will be talking with Dr. Robert Fosbury and Dr. Glen Jeffery, who will discuss the vital role of infrared light in all life and its incredible benefits for our health.

Stay tuned for more information!
