Why Office Lighting Matters: A Salutogenic Perspective on Workplace Wellbeing

Why Office Lighting Matters: A Salutogenic Perspective on Workplace Wellbeing

In the modern workplace, where productivity and employee wellbeing are top priorities, the profound impact of the physical environment is increasingly acknowledged. Among the many elements that contribute to a positive and productive workspace, lighting is often surprisingly overlooked as a strategic asset. Yet, the quality of the lit environment plays a fundamental and multifaceted role in shaping cognitive performance, emotional health, and overall workplace satisfaction. To truly design offices that foster holistic wellbeing, organisations should urgently begin to view lighting through a salutogenic lens, focusing not merely on the absence of illness, but on the active promotion of health and human flourishing.

Workplace

The Lit Environment: More Than Just Illumination

For too long, lighting in offices has been narrowly reduced to a question of compliance – simply ensuring that enough lumens are provided for employees to complete their tasks without visual strain. However, this functionalist view dramatically underestimates light’s true power. Light is not just a utility; it is a profound environmental cue that shapes our mood, influences our energy levels, regulates our crucial circadian rhythms, and even affects our ability to connect socially and collaborate effectively. A truly salutogenic lighting design moves beyond basic illumination to consider all these vital dimensions, creating an environment that actively supports human health and potential.

  1. Natural Light Access Daylight remains the gold standard for healthy office lighting. Exposure to natural light regulates the circadian system, which governs sleep-wake cycles and impacts alertness and mood. Offices designed to maximise daylight access, whether through large windows, skylights, or glass partitions, support biological health and and reduce reliance on artificial light.
  2. Dynamic and Tunable Lighting Static lighting throughout the day fails to align with our body’s natural rhythms. Dynamic lighting systems that adjust colour temperature and intensity based on the time of day can mimic natural light patterns, supporting cognitive performance in the morning and facilitating relaxation towards the end of the day.
  3. Visual Comfort and Avoidance of Glare Overhead fluorescent lights or poorly positioned LEDs can cause glare, visual fatigue, and headaches. Salutogenic lighting prioritises visual comfort through diffused illumination, indirect lighting sources, and adjustable task lighting, helping reduce stress and eye strain.
  4. Psychological Impact of Light Lighting also shapes the psychological atmosphere of a space. Cooler, bright light can stimulate focus, while warmer tones create a sense of calm and social warmth. Thoughtful lighting design can therefore support different zones within the office: energising spaces for collaboration and calmer zones for quiet focus.
Designing for Wellbeing: Moving Beyond Compliance in the Workplace

Organisations that view office lighting purely as a compliance checklist miss an opportunity to cultivate wellbeing. Instead, consider questions like:

  • Does our lighting strategy support employees’ circadian health?
  • Can workers personalise their immediate lighting environment?
  • Does the lighting foster a sense of coherence, manageability, and meaningfulness in the workspace (key pillars of salutogenic design)?

Incorporating these considerations doesn’t necessarily require a complete overhaul. Small interventions, such as introducing adjustable desk lamps, reducing glare, or programming existing lighting systems for dynamic changes, can make meaningful differences.

Conclusion

In an era where employee engagement, retention, and holistic wellbeing are increasingly recognised as key drivers of organisational success, the lit environment can no longer be treated as a passive backdrop or an afterthought. By adopting a salutogenic lens, office lighting transforms from a mere functional necessity into an active and powerful contributor to health, satisfaction, and ultimately, productivity.
