Natural dark skies play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting human health, and preserving cultural heritage. Dark skies are an essential environmental condition for regulating circadian rhythms in both humans and animals, influencing sleep cycles, hormone production, and overall well-being.

The Rise of Light Pollution

Outdoor lighting schemes are becoming increasingly sophisticated, creating safer, more accessible spaces at night. Unfortunately, this progress has also come with an often-overlooked cost, the rise of light pollution. The excessive, misdirected, and sometimes unnecessary use of artificial outdoor lighting, has adverse effects on plants and animals, disrupting natural cycles and in turn disrupting ecosystems.

Natural dark skies play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting human health, and preserving cultural heritage. Dark skies are an essential environmental condition for regulating circadian rhythms in both humans and animals, influencing sleep cycles, hormone production, and overall well-being.

Understanding Light Pollution

Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) has varying effects on wildlife and other natural organisms; it can confuse migratory birds, sea turtles and insects, whilst also affecting the feeding patterns of mammals. Human health risks are also present with exposure to ALAN; it can interfere with the body’s production of melatonin, which is linked to sleep disruption and can lead to severe health issues.

Light pollution typically appears in multiple forms including:

  • Skyglow: The brightening of the night sky over urban spaces.
  • Glare: Excessive brightness causing visual discomfort.
  • Light trespass: Light spilling into unwanted areas.
  • Clutter: Overlapping, confusing lighting arrangements.
  • Street Lighting: Poorly designed or excessively bright public lighting.
  • Commercial Lighting: Floodlights on buildings, car parks, and sports facilities.
  • Advertising: Illuminated billboards and signs.

 

Key Lighting Design Strategies

Effective lighting design should prioritise control, precision, and environmental sensitivity to minimise unnecessary light pollution while maintaining functionality and safety. Rather than relying on static systems, adaptive solutions that respond to real conditions can be utilised. Advanced control systems such as Casambi enable flexibility through dimming, scheduling, and integration with motion or daylight sensors, allowing lighting levels to respond dynamically to user needs. This not only increases energy efficiency but also reduces excessive lighting during low-use periods, particularly at night.

It is equally important to be intentional with the selection and positioning of lighting equipment. Incorporating warm colour temperatures into an outdoor lighting scheme, helps minimise disruption to human and wildlife circadian rhythms, while glare shields help prevent light spill and reduce visual discomfort. Using targeted illumination along with controlled lighting intensity helps to direct light only where it is needed and avoids unnecessary brightness.

Another useful consideration when using ALAN, is whether it is necessary for functionality or purely decorative.

Moving forward, designing better lighting requires a shift from over-illumination to intentional, responsive systems that balance human needs with environmental responsibility. By incorporating smart controls in combination with appropriate technology and thoughtful design principles, we can create lighting schemes that enhance safety and usability, while significantly reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.
