The Sainsbury Laboratory in Cambridge, UK, designed by Stanton Williams Architects, is a celebrated example of contemporary research architecture that thoughtfully integrates natural and artificial lighting into its design. The building, which houses the University of Cambridge’s plant science research centre, won the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2012 and is widely admired for its sensitivity to context, sustainability, and the well-being of its users.
The design emphasises transparency, clarity, and connection to the surrounding Botanic Garden. The use of large expanses of glass, concrete, and natural wood creates a calm, rational environment conducive to focused research. Lighting design played a critical role in supporting this ethos, balancing the need for precise working conditions with visual comfort and architectural expression.
We worked with Arup to create the lighting design for this fantastic and award-winning space.
